1903 (17th July) 2d Hobart tied by Launceston cds on locally addressed cover with 'DETAINED FOR FUMIGATION" cachet. This was due to a serious outbreak of smallpox after a travelling performer had contracted the disease in India & visited Launceston. Mail was fumigated & had this h/s applied accordingly. The "Examiner" newspaper advised that all mail including newspapers would be fumigated for two hours before despatch. Minor blemishes with small tear at top. Lewellyn Tasmania receival cds on front. A rarely seen & fascinating cover. Thought to be 10 recorded examples. Purchased from Rex & Fair for $1850 & originally sold in Ace Auctions Sale 29 for $1600+BP
