Lot Details

1911 Stamp Design Competition. One of two designs submitted by "Wattle Blossoms", the nom-de-plume for this artist, one of the 533 entrants into the competition. The block mounted design in b&w incls the words "AUSTRALIA" & "POSTAGE" & the denomination in words & figures as instructed by the Postmaster-General of the day, Josiah Thomas. Annotated "Design No. 1" at base, the 838mm x 1012mm scene depicted is an Allegorical figure leaning on shield with a kangaroo nearby & the Southern Cross above. Reproduced below on a photographic plate & another in red both measuring 28mm x 22mm. "285" in blue crayon at top & pin/staple holes in the card border suggest it was mounted for judging. Not recorded or illustrated in the current ACSC. Most attractive & a "new find" from a non-collector in country WA! (see back cover).
