Lot Details

1868 (12th Aug) York 15 barred numeral "16" proving cover with 2d DLR swan tied by BN15-16 with neighbouring York Col1 cds. Addressed to "Captain Dempster, Brig Mary Ann, Tien Tsin, Roebourne". Tien Tsin Harbour was renamed Cossack in 1872 & the harbour itself Port Walcott. The brig MaryAnn was made in Tasmania of Blue Gum & in March 1968 was purchased in partnership by the addressee Captain James McLean Dempster & was being outfitted for pearling in Tien Tsin Harbour at the time of receiving this letter. The cover has pencil notations on the front & is not one of the proving covers listed in Pope and Reynolds. Ex Sykes.
