1933 (15th Mar) San Francisco to Perth endorsed "via R.M.S. "Makura" with US 2c & 3c tied by "Packet Boat" double ring cancels & neighbouring "MARINE POST OFFICE NZ RMS MAKURA" cds. Similar to the "Maunganui", the "Makarai" was also used to carry the Royal Mail for the Union Steam Ship Company of New Zealand. Built in 1908, the Sydney run to Vancouver was via Hawaii. Interestingly Shackleton Antarctic expedition members, Capt. J. R. Stenhouse, Capt. F. Worsley & Dr. J. L. Cope all travelled onboard.
