1948 (22nd Mar) 6 page Telegram from Heard Island to Melbourne on RAAF Forms "A.ss (Revised May, 1942)" with red title strip on each page. Signal Department "A.H.M. - 8/42 - B2913" at base with typed message from "Camp Atlas Cove Heard Island". Sent by Aubrey Gotley, OIC Heard Island Meteorological Stations detailing cyclonic events of the 14th July (1948). By 9pm a wind gust of 108mph was experienced & was the strongest recorded since the establishment of the weather station. Other details provide a commentary on the affects of the cyclone on local fauna. Last page torn, reinforced & repaired otherwise fine cond. An interesting & important piece of the Antarctic story. A second transmission under "Australian National Antarctic Research Expedition" letterhead was sent from Harry Thornton, a member of the 1950 expedition & authorised by Dr Phillip Law, Officer in Charge, Arctic Division with a brief Christmas & New Year greeting. Heard Island was formally claimed by Britain in 1910 until administration & management was transferred to Australia in 1947. (7 items)
